The Rivers “Timing is everything”

River fishing is one of the few environments where you can go out and catch big fish just a rods length away. For those who have never experienced river fishing for salmon and trout, you are missing out on some of the most exciting and exhilarating bites that happen all year long. Although catching these fish can be very simple, “timing is everything”.

At BIG GAME Fishing, our experienced guides spend a great deal of time scouting the creeks and rivers, in order to increase your changes for a successful and productive outing with us, because finding the fish is half the battle in the creeks.
If you can handle the cold you will not be disappointed during the spring and fall rainbow trout runs. Chest waders are a necessity to fish in the heavy cold water flows the river is noted for. After the ice breaks up in early March big migratory rainbows attract anglers to this premier fishery. From March to the end of May, rainbow trout stack the rivers and streams. At times the water pulsates with the flashing backs of these huge fish heading up to their spawning grounds.

Starting in late August, and with the first September rains, Chinook salmon enter the river mouths and a number of smaller streams that drain into lake Ontario, Georgian Bay, and Lake Huron. In some of these rivers and streams, big Chinooks pass through dams and fish ways upriver. Some of these locations provide an excellent opportunity to see huge fish as they fight currents and falls to push upstream to suitable spawning gravel. In the fall, the rainbow trout and Chinook salmon begin to run with rainbows remaining in the river from early fall until the late spring run ends. The rainbow runs start in early October continuing into November and often depending on weather conditions, early December.

River fishing is definitely great for beginners with big fish that are easy to catch, and puts up a fight that leaves you with a lasting memory that you will not soon forget.
